Rhinoplasty, more popularly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure for altering the shape or structure of the nose to enhance its appearance or functions. The procedure is either done as a part of a treatment procedure or for aesthetic reasons.
Purpose of Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries. It is also performed in cases of injuries to nose, birth defects or breathing related disorders. The rhinoplasty procedure helps in realising the following changes to the nose.
- A change in the size
- A change in the angle
- Straightening the bridge of the nose
- Reshaping the tip of the nose
- Narrowing the nostrils
A rhinoplasty for cosmetic purposes should be performed only after the nasal bones have reached their full growth. This could be around 15 years for girls and a little older for boys. However, rhinoplasty for health impairment can be done in all, irrespective of their ages.
Procedure of rhinoplasty
The rhinoplasty procedure is done only after a thorough physical examination to sort out the changes that needs to be made to the nose. The procedure is done under sedation after administering local or general anaesthesia depending upon the complexity of the procedure.
Once sedated, an incisions or cuts are made inside or in between the nostrils. The procedure involves separation of skin from bones or cartilage for restructuring. In case of addition of cartilage, extra cartilage is extracted from the ears or from nose itself. Bone grafts are used in some advanced cases.
While the procedure is conducted, vascularity is manipulated to reduce bleeding. Splints are placed after the procedure to limit the mobility of the restructured nose and to speed up healing process. The procedure might take up to 2 hours for completion.
The process does not demand hospitalisation and the splints can be removed after about 3 days from the procedure. Swelling of the face or nose and slight headaches are common post procedure symptoms that vanes after a few days.
